Newport (Port Nua)
Newport (Port Nua) formerly Tulach Sheastra (Irish), is about 4 km. from the banks of the Clare river, which separates Counties Tipperary and Limerick, Ireland. Newport is one link we know as the birthplace of Bridget Lynch, who came to Australia in 1859 with six children and ship record gives us this information:
Daughter of Daniel and Hannah Lynch.
Bridget Lynch was born in Newport, Tipperary,
Married Patrick Egan (who has not been traced). An Egan family are on church records in Newport including John, a child of Patrick Egan.
We know Patrick, was deceased when his wife and six children arrived in Port Jackson in 1859, aboard the ship"Abyssinian".
The children were shown as born in Broadford, Clare, Ireland which is about 25km. from Newport.
Today there is one Catholic church in the village of Newport, "The Church of the Most Holy Redeemer". It was constructed in 1933 and is located on Church street. It is part of the parish of Newport, Birdhill and Toor which is in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly. The earlier church was called St John's and may have referred to one of two churches in the town.

Church of Ireland, St. John's built in 1766, had been the major church in Newport until the building of a 'Mass house' was completed by the end of the 18th century after the relaxing of the penal laws. The last service in the Anglican (Church of Ireland) church also called St John's was held in 1964 and was later demolished. The church graveyard remains and is located on church road.
