More than 30 people ventured out in the cold and snow Wednesday night to attend a public hearing in the village of Ilion Crowd 2-10-16.2Ilion on the subject of the Armory Hill stairs. Resident after resident voiced opinions of the same mind saying the stairs, which have been closed since December due to deterioration, deserve to be fixed or replaced.

Ilion’s Armory Hill stairs have been closed to the public and barricaded for nearly two months. Now village officials announce a public hearing to help decide the steps ultimate fate. “We’re trying to gauge public opinion,” said Mayor Terry Leonard. “We want their input.”

The department’s Special Response Team conducted the raid at 85 West Clark Street, resulting in the arrest of Raul Estrada, 26, of 735 Garden St., Bronx. Police charged Estrada with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, a class B felony, with intent to sell and unlawful possession of marijuana, said Investigator Jeremiah Sninchak. A quantity of heroin, marijuana and cash was recovered at the scene, he said.

Tuesday morning a crew from Ritter & Paratore Contracting, Inc from Utica started demolition work at 248 North Main; the Glory Days building. The demolition will cost the Village $44,500 to simply tear the building down. Estimates for removing the debris to a landfill are upwards of $250,000 not including tipping fees which could add an additional $300,000.

Village of Herkimer Mayor, Tony Brindisi, said, “We’re in the process of declaring a state of emergency and will get it into a safe position. We think we have a grant to facilitate tearing it down through Senator Schumer.” DPW Superintendent, Peter Macri said, “It needs to come down for the safety of the community.” The Village DPW moved bunker blocks and blocked off the street.
