Bio:
Susan Bogert Warner was born on 11 July 1819 in New York City to Henry Warner and Anna Bartlett. Her father was a lawyer and her mother was from a wealthy New York family. Susan's mother died when she was a child, and her father eventually lost the family fortune in the Panic of 1837, forcing the family to leave their New York mansion and move to a farmhouse on Constitution Island.
Susan and her younger sister, Anna, began writing to supplement the family's income. They wrote several novels together, Susan under the pseudonym "Elizabeth Wetherell", and Anna as "Amy Lothrop".
Susan authored thirty novels, many of which went into multiple editions. Her first novel was also her most popular, The Wide, Wide World, published in 1850. This work was translated into several languages. With the exception of Uncle Tom's Cabin, it was the most widely circulated story by an American author.
Susan and her sister held Bible studies for the West Point cadets and introduced the popular children's song "Jesus Love Me", which the sisters penned. The song-- and the sisters' work-- became so popular that Susan was buried in the West Point Cemetery after her death on 17 March, 1885.
