Harriett Jay was an English novelist and playwright. She was born on 2 September 1853 in Grays, Essex to Richard Jay, a laborer at a chalk pit. In 1861, her elder sister, Mary, married writer Robert Buchanan, and Harriett moved in with the couple where she lived until Buchanan died in 1901. The two collaborated on several plays. She often referred to him as her "adoptive father", and later wrote a biography of him. Harriett never married, and died on 21 December 1932 in Ilsford, Essex.
Her first novel was published anonymously in 1875. She often wrote under the pseudonym "Charles Marlowe". Most of her novels were set in Ireland, presenting that country from an English point of view. In addition to her eight novels, she also wrote ten plays, some of which were later made into films.
