Catherine Maria Grindall was born in 1798 in Calcutta to Benjamin Grindall, an employee of the Bengal Civil Service. Orphaned as a child, Catherine grew up a ward in chancery court. In 1817, she married Lieutenant Colonel John Grey. The couple had seven children. Her husband died in 1842.
Catherine's first novel was Alice Seymour, published in 1831. She published twenty-one novels in all. Her most successful work was The Gambler's Wife, published in 1844.
Catherine died in 1870 in Cheltenham.
Two of Catherine's daughters also became writers. Anna Maria Grey published several novels, and another daughter, Mary Caroline Grey, wrote one novel. The works of the "Greys" are often confused with one another and an unrelated author, Maria Georgina Grey.
