Harriet Lister was born on 18 June 1809 at Armitage, England to Thomas Lister and Mary Grove. Harriet was half-sister to novelist Thomas Henry Lister, and also served as a maid of honour to Queen Victoria from 1837-1843. She was the only woman to do so who was not the daughter or grand-daughter of a peer.
She left her service to the queen to marry her cousin, Rev. Edward Hartopp Grove on 9 July 1844. He took the last name "Cradock" in 1849.
Harriet's first novel, Anne Grey, was published in 1834, and edited by her half-brother. She published four novels and some reference books on nature.
Harriet died on 16 June 1884 at Cowley Grange, near Oxford, England.
