Clara Reeve was born in Ipswich, England, in 1729, to Reverend William Reeve. She was one of eith children Her maternal grandfather was a jeweler to King George I.
Her most famous novel was originally published as The Champion of Virtue but was later known as The Old English Baron in 1777. This novel was influential to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
Clara's novels enjoyed much success during her lifetime. She led a retired life, never admitting any biographers. She died on December 3, 1803,in Ipswich. She was buried in the church-yard of Saint Stephens.
