Bio: Matilda Charlotte Jesse was born in August of 1811 in Staffordshire, England to Edward Jesse, the Deputy Surveyor of Royal Parks. She was educated by a Welsh governess who forbade her to read novels. She published her first novel, Recommended to Mercy anonymously in 1862. She published close to thirty novels before her death in June of 1892 in London, England.
