Bio:
Caroline Lucy Douglas was born 16 February 1784. She was the second daughter of Baron Archibald Douglas and Francis Scott, daughter of Francis Scott, the Earl of Dalkeith. In 1810, she married Admiral Sir George Scott. She was widowed in December of 1841. Lady Caroline died at Petersham, Surrey on 19 April 1857.
She was a relative to Lady Charlotte Campbell Bury, who edited her first novel, A Marriage in High Life (published in 1828). This, and her subsequent two, were published anonymously. After finding success, she put her name to her later works. At least one of her works, A Marriage in High Life, was falsely attributed to Lady Charlotte Campbell Bury in a subsequent edition of the novel.
Lady Caroline is sometimes confused with Lady Harriet Anne Scott, another novelist and one of her contemporaries. There has been some question whether the novels, The Only Child and The Dream of a Life, which are generally attributed to Lady Harriet Scott were, in fact, written by Lady Caroline. Both women authored works under the title "Lady Scott", therefore causing the confusion. It seems more likely that these works are, indeed, Lady Harriet's, due to their publication dates. A third "Lady Scott"- Lady Lydia Scott-- has also sometimes been credited for Lady Caroline's works.
