Bio: Born Ellen Price on January 14, 1814, in Worcester, England, she was married to Henry Wood by 1836. Henry worked in the banking and shipping trade in the south of France, where the couple lived for 20 years. After his business failed, the family moved to London, and Ellen turned to writing to help support them.
She wrote over 30 novels, the most famous of which was East Lynne. In 1867, she purchased the English magazine, Argosy, and wrote much of the publication herself. She died of bronchitis in 1887, and her son, Charles, took it over. Her estate at the time of her death was valued at over £36,000, which was a considerable sum. She was buried in Highgate Cemetery, London.
