Emma Robinson was the daughter of a bookseller in Oxford Street. She was considered radical under different aspects-- adverse to colonialism and favourable to divorce. She wrote both historical and feminist novels with good success. All of her novels were sent out anonymously. Whitefirars was, by far, her most popular work, receiving high eclat during its time. Nothing is known of the first 30 years of her life and of the last 20. She died in a lunatic asylum in London in December 1890.
