Ellen Pickering was an English novelist who lived her early life in Bath. Her family owned property in the West Indies, but sustained heavy losses, and the family moved to Hampshire. Ellen began writing about 1825 with the goal of earning a living at it. She became relatively successful in her endeavors and was quite popular. The most successful of her novels was "Nan Darrell", which was published in 1839.
Ellen died at Bath on November 25, 1843.
The Grumbler was her last completed novel. "The Grandfather" was incomplete at her death, and was later finished by Elizabeth Youatt and published in 1844.
