Bio:
Harriet Anne Shanks was born in Bombay, India in 1829 to Henry Shank of Fife, Scotland. She married Sir James Sibbald David Scott on 28 November 1844. Harriet died at 18 Cornwall Gardens, Queen's Gate, London on 8 April 1894.
Lady Harriet Scott is sometimes confused with her contemporary, Lady Caroline Lucy Scott, herself a novelist. Lady Harriet's first four novels were published anonymously, and there has been some question on whether or not they were hers or Lady Caroline Scott's works. They are generally considered to be hers, however. Lady Harriet's writing has been compared to that of Susan Ferrier.
In addition to her novels, Lady Harriet also contributed to the "Queen" newspaper and various magazines. She also published a small book, Cottagers Comforts and other Recipes in Knitting and Crochet in 1887.
