Bio: Elizabeth Sara Shepard was born at Blackheath, England in 1830 to a clergyman father. Her father died shortly after her birth, leaving his family with no provision. Her mother opened a school to provide for her children. Elizabeth became an accomplished linguist, fluent in Greek, Latin, Hebrew, French, and German. She was also a capable musician, and taught music to her mother's students. She began her first novel, Charles Auchester, at the age of 16. Benjamin Disraeli said of the novel, "No greater book will ever be written upon music, and it will one day be recognized as the imaginative classic of that divine art." It was published anonymously in 1853, but Disraeli's predictions did not come true and it met with some criticism. She never married, and died at Brixton, England on March 13, 1862.
