When in school, whether it’s on the computer or inside a classroom, racism may or may not be a topic that is talked about. It can make people feel uncomfortable or upset, which is normal. However, even though it may feel uncomfortable, it is something that happens in the world, and it’s important that acts of racism are identified and stopped.
I believe that racism and the idea of Black Lives Matter and People of Color Matter is an important discussion that should be had. There are many different ways that it could be taught, and it will be taught differently. Maybe someone is taught about racism in school by reading books that are available in the classroom, while another person actually has a period in class where they talk about racism.
Different feelings will be felt while talking and thinking about racism, and that is OK! Noticing those feelings is important, and don’t feel embarrassed about something you might be feeling or thinking. Maybe you feel jittery and upset, or interested and confused. Those are all normal emotions and not bad to feel or have.
Conversations about acts of racism and ways to stop them are important as well. Learning about racism is great, but it won’t do you much good if you don’t know how to stop it. Talking about ways that you can help stop racism is also a great topic to discuss. Group talks about racism with other peers and classmates can show you that you’re not alone, and working together can help generate more positive ideas about stopping racist things. Make sure you listen to everyone’s ideas, and don’t be rude towards someone even if you might disagree with what they have to say. Everyone has their own opinions and it’s important you respect that.
School is a great place to have conversations about racism. You can be in a safe environment with trusted adults and peers, and hopefully you don’t have to feel worried about sharing the things you know about racism.
Making sure that everyone is heard is something that should be a big focus. Everyone’s voice is needed!! Having everyone contribute in a safe place to talk about racism is awesome! If racism isn’t being discussed and you feel like it should be, talk to your teacher or another adult in your school building. This way your voice will be heard, and hopefully they will put the effort in to find a way to talk about racism. Always respect yourself and others, and try to make everyone feel safe and comfortable no matter where they are or what they’re doing, because at the end of the day, everyone matters!!
