Hello, we are two 6th graders, Tess and Maia, and this column is entirely for talking about racism. This topic can be really tough to talk about, however it is something that people have to recognize.
Unfortunately, it happens to someone every day, and together, we can all help stop that.
Before we can do anything though, we all need to understand what racism is. Racism is when you are judged or discriminated based upon your race.
What is race? A race is a group of people that share certain physical traits, such as your skin color or hair type. Some of these groups include African American, Hispanic, and Asian. Just know that there are many, many different races and each and every one of them are special and beautiful!
At the end of this column there is a link to a google form called Racism Experiences. If you would like, you can answer the questions in the form, but don’t worry, you don’t have to share your name, and if you do it will not be shared with anyone else. Every month, we will look back at all of the questions submitted, and will choose a couple to answer in the next issue. Sadly, we cannot guarantee that your questions will be answered, but do know that you are heard and that we did receive your question. Just because your question wasn’t answered does not mean that it’s not important. The questions that are answered are randomly chosen, and you should not feel hurt if your question is not answered.
Each month we will also give ideas on things that you can do to help stop racist things. Hopefully you will try out some of our suggested ideas, and feel free to submit on what you did in the google form! Thanks
Maia and Tess :)
