What comes to your mind when you think of fall? Some people might think of chilly, windy weather with all the green leaves from the summer blowing off the trees, forcing people to rake the leaves and wear extra clothes like sweaters. Others might think of pie, or Halloween, or Thanksgiving, or jumping into piles of leaves, or the beautiful colors the leaves turn into, or a break from the heat of the summer. If you are one of those people, you may think fall is the best season. But is it really?
In my opinion, fall is the second best season. My favorite season is winter because of the holidays and snow. But fall is my second favorite because for one, it’s my birthday season, and also because of Halloween and the piles of leaves.
I interviewed Mr. Peterka, my classroom teacher, about what his opinion was.
“That’s a hard question,” answered Mr. Peterka when I asked him what his favorite season was. “Honestly, I think my favorite part of the seasons is the change between them, like when I begin to notice that the weather is getting warmer, or windier, or sunnier. But if I had to choose, I think I like fall the best because, well, for one thing, it’s the season of squash. You know, the plant? I also think it’s pretty neat that it has two names: fall and autumn. No other seasons have more than one name other than fall, at least that’s how it is in English.”
I looked it up and found that autumn is the older word, and comes from the word autumnus which means harvest. Fall comes from the phrase ‘The fall of leaves,’ and got shortened later on. “To me, autumn sounds more poetic and reminds me more of its colors. Fall sounds more dreary and reminds me of its falling leaves.” Mr. Peterka said.
I also asked several students what they thought on this subject. I got mostly summer and fall. If you’re surprised, you’re not the only one! The reason I was surprised is because I thought that spring or winter would win, but apparently summer and fall won!
Fall is definitely a great season, whether it’s the best or not, but it’s definitely one that is full of changes and leaves. The results were: winter: 1, spring: 2, summer: 4, and fall: 3.
