This module provides an introduction to the archaeology of later medieval England (c. AD 1100-1500), and its setting in north-western Europe. It explores many of the important theoretical issues relevant to later medieval archaeology, and also a range of problem-solving strategies within the discipline. The module consists of two elements: a series of lectures introducing important themes and debates within medieval archaeology, and series of seminars that consider specific case-studies and key sites.
By the end of the module, you will be able to:
A good understanding of the field of later medieval archaeology
Be able to critically assess the strengths of the different traditions within the field
Have acquired a detailed understanding of the key issues and debates central to the period
Have a good understanding of the practice of later medieval archaeology
Have developed their analytical skills and have had the opportunity to improve oral delivery

Teaching and indicative seminar plan:
The module will be taught in six, one-hour lectures and six, one-hour seminars. Additionally, you will spend two hours on a site visit.
