Follow-up activities should reinforce or extend the learning from the guided reading lesson. These need to be purposeful and planned.
Such activities related to the text may include:
- creating a chart, diagram, or poster to re-present a key idea from the text visually;
- exploring a tagged cached Internet site for further information;
- composing and drafting their own piece using the structure or language of the text;
- creating a graphic organiser and using it to extract and analyse ideas or information about the text;
- reading more about the topic being investigated;
- reading other texts by the same author;
- taking part in drama activities.
Many of the activities listed on the Independent Reading Activities page can be adjusted to suit a follow-up purpose. The TSM (Teacher Support Materials) that accompany many of the Ready to Reads and Journals also include Follow-Up Activity suggestions.
