Designs will all be different
Colour should be unique
Materials used will be similar
Similar manufacture process
Manufactured models may start out looking similar as they will use the same materials and have common features - such as the standardised Micro:Bit slot measuring 53mm x 67mm
However, once the design shapes start to take form and colour/pattern work is added, these models will all look very different.
The main material used to build the product will be MDF.
The amount of MDF layers is individual to the design.
MDF layer options come in 8mm, 6mm and 3mm thicknesses.
Step 1 - has 2 parts which are to draw the outline of the Micro:Bit and drill holes on the inside of the pencil shape.
This template should measure 53mm x 67mm
Step 2 - use a round file to connect each drilled hole to the next. Eventually the center shape will drop out.Â
The more holes you drill the better.
Step 3 - after connecting each round hole with the round file, use a flat file to tidy up the edges and to create flat sides.
Don't forget you still need rounded corners.
Examples of what Step 1 looks like with the outline already cut out.Â
Cutting the outline out at this stage is optional.

Step 4 - use a flat file to file the edges up to the pencil line you drew in Step 1.
Do not file over the pencil line.
Step 4 continued - use a Micro:Bit to fit and test the size of the slot you are filing.
The slot must be exact so this step should be done multiple times.
Filing should be done slowly and carefully at specific points or corners to allow the Micro:Bit to slot in without any gaps.
Step 5 - sand a rounded edge only on the top side of the layer.
Use sandpaper for this step, not a file!
This helps neaten the edges and makes the gap look better.
Don't forget the corners still need to be rounded as the Micro:Bit corners are rounded
We will use 3 layers of 7mm MDF
Carefully draw your design shape on 1 of the layers. Fill the space with the design going up to all of the edges.
Carefully draw around the microbit holder to position the space for it.
Ensure you drill inside the line
IMPORTANT! - DUST IS DANGEROUS IF WE DO NOT CONTROL IT PROPERLY
