These are our essays that elaborate on a few of the themes from the book Holes.

English FAT: Creative Writing Project - Write Up
"Anything is possible when you have the right people there to support you." This quote points out the evident theme of friendship demonstrated throughout the novel, Holes. This essay will explore friendship in both Holes and in my own life.
“"I’ll try to teach you to read if you want,” Stanley offered. “I don’t know if I know how to teach, but I’m not that worn out today, since you dug a lot of my hole.” A big smile spread across Zero’s face."
Stanley and Zero’s companionship flourishes when Zero assists Stanley to dig his hole after the sunflower seed episode. Zero’s kindness eases Stanley and he kindly decides to up-skill Zero by teaching him to read and write. Zero’s smile at hearing Stanley’s proposition conveys the theme of friendship as two boys, both straining in a difficult world, find comfort in each other. As the narrative carries on, Stanley and Zero show the strength and bond of friendship as they help out one another overcome challenges and hurdles, both basking in the joy of their shared camaraderie, mutual respect for each other, and faithfulness between them.
In comparison to Stanley, I have experienced an event relating to this. My brother and I are very close, and we help each other all the time, where we can. I help him with his maths and History homework, and we play hockey together to improve my skills, which is really fun. It felt great to help someone, and to have fun and share laughter with them at the same time. When my family, friends or peers are in trouble or stuck, I like to help them as much as possible, no matter my current situation. I enjoy helping to upskill people and get them to reach the best of their abilities, and learn new skills and discover secret talents. I believe that you should treat everyone with kindness, even if you have experienced woes with them in the past. Being kind to someone can boost one's own happiness, as well as inspire them to do good deeds and share joy in return. My friends and family are caring and gentle towards me daily, and I return this to them. My friends are selfless, loving, amiable, and always try their best to make me happy and to have fun together. My family is sincere, true, and wonderful and we share a close and loving bond.
To sum up everything that has been stated above - having a friend or many friends brings a lot of joy and happiness into our lives. Friends can bring out the best in you and help build confidence in yourself. They can also offer support and motivation, and part of the joy of friendship is that this can always be reciprocal.

¨Is your best friend the most annoying person on the planet but you would totally take a bullet for them?¨ (unknown). This quote shows how annoying best friends are but also how loyal you would be if their life was on the line, or even if you are joking it just shows how important this friendship is. You could live your life with thousands of people claiming to be your friends but only one person could be your proper best friend. have more than one bestfriend and if so", I am very jealous of you and hope you love them like they love you! This essay will discuss the comparison of how friendship impacts different characters in comparison.
"He gathered his strength and for a brief second seemed to defy gravity as he took a quick step up the wall and, with Zero’s help, pulled himself the rest of the way over the ledge . . . Zero had deep gashes in both hands. He had held on to the metal blade of the shovel, keeping it in place, as Stanley climbed."
Whilst Stanley and Zero attempt to live their break out from Camp Green Lake by hiking the mountain to Big Thumb, their confidence and dependence in each other increases. Each struggles mentally and physically to help the other survive. Now the story teller reports how Stanley and Zero had to loft each other the steep ledge, Stanley lifts Zero when he is on his knees. It shows how far they were willing to go for each other and how much trust they have even after sharing their secrets they are so loving towards each other like they have known each other since they were born.
While Stanley and Zero have such a strong bond it would be impossible to separate them. I have had these friends since we were two years old, they are twins and I've always had such a strong bond and even at the age of twelve, we played mermaids and spies and we always lifted each other up", but when they moved away I felt lost for a while and I have now realised that Stanley and Zero's bond is so strong that nothing can get in the way of their friendship. A bond like Stanley and Zero is very rare and could be harder to find than gold or a non-existent person, and if you find it then you are probably the luckiest person to walk the earth and I think you hit the jackpot.
In my introductory quote it shows how your best friends make you feel daily and that you could never get rid of them no matter how annoying they can be you will always think of them like your sibling. A best friend by definition is a person's closet friend and I think it means a person's most annoying and kind friend and they support you when you really need it and they have seen you at your worst and wouldn't post it on social media like a fake friend. An you know you are best friends when you spend literally everyday with them and could never think of killing each other yet.

“Zero’s too stupid to learn to read. That’s what makes his blood boil. Not the hot sun.” This quote gives a slim piece of information about what type of cruelty is referred to in Holes. For the rest of my essay I will elucidate on other moments where this book brushed over the topic of cruelty.
"He was overweight and the kids at his middle school often teased him about his size. Even his teachers sometimes made cruel comments without realising it. On his last day of school, his maths teacher, Mrs. Bell, taught ratios. As an example, she chose the heaviest kid in class and the lightest kid in class . . . Mrs. Bell wrote the ratio on the board, 3:1, unaware of how much embarrassment she had caused both of them."
This is a quote from the book and is a perfect example of cruelty"." This quote does not represent physical cruelty",but" rather mental. The teacher is discriminating against Stanley because of his weight. The storyteller reports Stanley Yelnats's life prior to being shipped off to Camp Green Lake. This defeatist event in school reveals one of the many examples of cruelty established throughout the novel, as Stanley's associates and even his educators made hurtful comments and bullied him. The type of reception reported in this scene acts as a base for the cruelty Stanley will resume to experience and observe at Camp Green Lake, developing him for the challenges that lie ahead.
“You thirsty, Caveman?” Mr. Sir asked . . . Mr. Sir opened the nozzle, and the water flowed out of the tank, but it did not go into Stanley’s canteen. Instead, he held the canteen right next to the stream of water. Stanley watched the water splatter on the dirt, where it was quickly absorbed by the thirsty ground" .
The storyteller reveals that Mr. Sir uses a basic human right such as water as a form of torture towards Stanley as vengeance. Mr. Sir guilts Stanley for the scratches with rattlesnake venom he agonised at the hands of the Warden. Stanley anticipated Mr. Sir to penalise him somehow, and the consultant's depriving him of water just shows how right Stanley's prediction was.
In contrast with my first quote, I have not gone through exactly what Stanley was going through with his weight, however, I did go through a similar experience with a different aspect of my appearance. When I was younger I used to get made fun of for the birthmark above my cupid's bow. People used to ask me things like "what's wrong with your face?" or "did you fall over?" Many people think that things like this will be forgotten eventually, but for me this will be a memory that stays in the back of my head forever. I used to get these questions from students as well as teachers when I was all but eight years old.
In comparison with my first quote I think that most people have gone through a situation where people made them feel out of place or like something about them was unusual, but have you ever gone through something where people make you feel like you look or act just like everybody else? Because I have. When I was growing up, my whole family used to say my eyes were beautiful or special because they had the colour of a european ocean, but when I went to school everybody used to tell me who I looked like or that I had the same eyes as most people, they started stereotyping me with a typical blond haired, blue eyed girl. This made me feel like I was basic and not interesting at all and eventually I missed the feeling of being different.
In contrast with my second quote, adding a little more context to the situation, Mr. Sir had been scratched with rattlesnake poison that was on the warden's nails because Stanley had stepped out of line.As payback to Stanley, Mr Sir would pretend that he would fill up Stanley's canteen but instead just pour the water onto the ground, this was difficult for Stanley because working in the vehemence of the desert made his mouth feel more sun-baked than a lizard's scales. In my opinion most people should have been in a situation where something that they really wanted or even needed got taken away from them because of some petty drama going on with someone else. In my case I've lost so many friends because of a fight that I had with one person, in one situation I even got kicked out of a group.
In conclusion to my essay I think that although cruelty is a big theme in Holes it's also a role in all of our day to day lives We all struggle with something whether it be mental or physical As quoted from one of my favourite shows Modern Family: 'everyone's got their stuff' .
