Chapter 44

It was dark and only the office’s lights were on. Stanley led Zero to the hole. Stanley started to dig in the hole as Zero left to fill the water jars. Stanley told himself that Kate Barlow probably wouldn’t have been able to dig much deeper than he had so he started digging wider. Zero came back from refilling and took over the digging. Stanley sifted through the dirt, using his hands, checking to see if he had missed anything. They finished the water Zero collected. Stanley offered to get them more but Zero told him that he walks too loud. Stanley kept digging and started running out of space. When Stanley brought the shovel down on the side of the wall, the shovel bounced off of something hard. Stanley moved the shovel up and down continuously and the object became more obvious. He felt, with his hands, that it had the smooth texture of metal. The object was box-like. He tried pulling the object out, but it would not move. He was afraid that the only way to get the box-like object was to start back up at the surface and work their way down, which they did not have time for. Stanley began to dig underneath the object and hoped that itnwould’n cave in. When the tunnel was as long as his arm, he still could not feel the end of the object. He kept on digging and eventually could feel that it was some kind of suitcase. He pulled it out of the dirt and handed it over to Zero. As he tried to pull himself up and out of the hole, he heard the Warden thanking both Stanley and Zero.
