Zero slowly began to recover, he asked if he could help dig, but Stanley refused his offer. The water hole was filled with plenty of water and was nearly as large as the ones at Camp Green Lake. The boys' clothes were filthy, especially their socks. They didn't want to contaminate the water hole with the filth from their socks, so they poured water over them.
Zero explains to Stanley how he never went to the homeless shelter often, because if they knew he never had a mother he would become a ward of the state. Neither of the boys knew what that meant. He also says how he wanted to become a Cub Scout and liked what they wore. Zero mentioned his mother, but Stanley was surprised because he thought that he never had one. Zero continues, saying that they only took what was necessary and never knew it was stealing. Zero confesses that he stole Clyde Livingston's shoes, but never knew. Everyone made a fuss how they disappeared, so he put them on the hood of a car. Later, Zero tries to take new shoes, he feels bad that he got them both into this mess.
