Chapter 25

In Green Lake there was one doctor. When people went to see him they went to see not only him but also Sam the onion man. Sam always gave the same advice: 'Eat lots of onions.' The people of Green Lake would go to Sam and the doctor and when they were cured they never knew who had cured them.

Katherine Barlow was talking to San about a leak in the roof of the schoolhouse, he said he could fix it so they made a deal. Sam would fix the roof between classes. He wasn't allowed to attend any classes since he was a Negro. They would talk and read poems. When the roof was fixed she found problem after problem until the building was transformed. She wasn't happy and ran out to hug Mary Lou, the donkey, telling Sam that her heart was breaking. He took her hands and kissed her. No one could see them because of the rain however Hattie Parker saw them and pointed her shaking finger saying that God will punish them.
