Stanley took a four minute shower because of the shortage of water, ate an unpleasant dinner and went to bed. At dinner, he was asked about what crime he committed. He explained that he stole Clyde Livingston's sneakers, but the other boys didn’t believe him. Clyde Livingston was a famous baseball player. He is the only person in history to have ever hit four triples in one game. Clyde Livingston had donated his sneakers to help raise money for the homeless.
When Stanley went to bed, he was scared that his cot would break whilst turning over, because of his weight.
We learn about Derrick Dunne, a very small boy, who would torment Stanley at school, although Stanley was significantly bigger which is why the teachers never took his complaints seriously. Stanley missed the bus, because he was being bullied, and had to walk home. On the way home, Clyde Livingston's sneakers fell from the sky and hit his head. He took this as a sign since his father was trying to recycle used sneakers. Stanley ran with the sneakers in his hands, but a patrol car pulled up next to him and asked why he was running. Then he took the sneakers and made a call. The sneakers were supposed to be at a display at a homeless shelter where many rich people would come and auction for the sneakers. All the money would be donated to the homeless. The trial for “stealing” the sneakers was delayed by several months. They couldn't afford a lawyer so his mother had told him to just tell the truth, but no one believed that the sneakers fell from the sky. The judge said that he would have to choose between going to jail or Camp Green Lake. Stanley chose Camp Green Lake.
