Chapter 22

Stanley was the first one finished. While he waited for Zero to return from his shower, he wondered why Zero dug some of his hole for him. Stanley thanked Zero when he returned. Zero responded quite vaguely when he was asked why he dug part of Stanley's hole. When Zero got up to go, Stanley told Zero that he would teach him how to read and write. First, he made Zero recite the alphabet, then he showed him how to write out a few of the letters. Zero said that he would dig part of Stanley’s hole each day, in exchange for lessons. Stanley was surprised that Zero was good at Maths. Zero said that he wasn’t stupid and he just doesn’t like answering other people’s questions. Stanley thought that getting a break would be a relief, but he knew X-Ray wouldn't approve of it. He considered convincing Zero to dig part of X-Ray’s hole as well. Stanley decided that X-Ray didn’t deserve it because Stanley is the one teaching Zero and he took the blame for the sunflower seeds. While in bed, Stanley suddenly realised where he’d seen the gold tube before. He had seen it in his mother’s bathroom and in the Warden’s cabin. It was half of a lipstick container and it belonged to Kate Barlow.
