Chapter 26

This chapter explains what happened between Kate Barlow and Sam. Kate and Sam had kissed and at the time this happened, it was illegal for a black and a white person to kiss. Kate got in big trouble for this and many people were furious. The sheriff told Kate that if she kissed him, Sam would survive, but Kate refused. Kate and Sam tried to escape but Trout caught up to them and shot Sam. A while after all of this, Kate went to the sheriff and shot him. She gave the sheriff a kiss, and was now known as kissin' Kate Barlow. Even after she had done this, Kate was miserable and devastated for the next twenty years.
