Chapter 20

Stanley and Mr. Sir were going to the Warden's cabin to tell her about the sunflower incident. When they got to the Wardens cabin, Stanley realised that there were lots of holes by her cabin. The Warden let them in. As Stanley walked into the cool room, the Warden turned off the TV and sat down. When she asked why they were there, Stanley explained how he stole and ate Mr. Sir's sunflower seeds, even though he didn’t. The Warden seemed to understand and turned to Mr Sir. He handed the half eaten sunflower seeds to the Warden. Stanley claimed to have spilt a lot of the seeds in his hole. The Warden asked Stanley to fetch a small flowered case. Stanley walked into a kind of dressing room with a sink and mirror. He saw the case on the sink and gave it to the Warden. She set it on her glass coffee table next to him. She held up her special dark red nail polish that she had made herself. The nail polish was made out of rattlesnake venom, which is harmless when dry, but toxic when wet. She began to paint both of her nails with it and then started running her fingers down Stanley's face. The Warden asked Mr. Sir if Stanley had stolen the sunflower seeds. Mr. Sir said he thought that Stanley didn’t steal them. The Warden struck Mr. Sir’s face. She left three, long, red venom marks across it. He fell to the floor with a scream and started twitching. The Warden told Stanley to get back to his hole, and that Mr. Sir wasn’t going to die, unfortunately for him.
