Zigzag said it was his birthday and demanded extra privileges because of it. Stanley figured out, with the help of Zero, that he had been at the Camp for forty-six days. Mr. Sir wasn't depriving him of water anymore. When Zero dug some of Stanley's hole each day the other boys would make fun of him. One day they took it too far and started a fight. The Warden came out to see what was happening. Stanley tells the Warden that he is teaching Zero how to read and write. The Warden asks Zero some questions about this, but Mr. Pendanski kept annoying Zero had had enough and smacked Mr. Pendanski across the face with a shovel and ran away into the desert wasteland of Camp Green Lake. The Warden ordered no one to shoot him, because he would have to eventually come back for water eventually.
