Dear Summerside Families,
There is ALWAYS a lot happening at Summerside to be proud of and this past week was no exception! You can ask your first-grader about sets of ten and what it means when you have two sets of ten and how much you have when you put them together with three sets of ten or take away one set of ten (Ohio State Math Standards: 1NBT.4 and 1NBT.6). You can ask your fourth-grader about how they are breaking down word problems to build and then represent the equation B = A x 10. Some students were giving examples like 6,530 = 653 x 10 and 12,000/10 = 1,200 and deciding if both were correct given the information in the word problem (Ohio State Math Standards: 4NBT.1). In these two examples from this past week, you can see how important mastery of standard is for our students to "get" what is being learned in each grade level to continue to build on their understanding each year. It is so exciting to see how clearly the first-grade skills being learned today will play out in our fourth-grade classrooms in the years to come!
All of our instruction for all content is rooted in Ohio's Learning Standards and mastery of standards are noted in your child's report cards which are open and available in Powerschool for all parents to see where their child is excelling and where they need to continue to grow. Benchmark assessment reports were recently sent home as well so that you can see your child's academic growth since the start of the school year and how their growth compares to national norms. Our partnership in helping your child succeed every day, in every way is so imperative to their future in becoming happy, healthy, independent people as outlined in our WC Portrait of a Graduate. We encourage all parents to continually connect with their child's teacher with questions and concerns (staff contact information is linked above). Parent-teacher conferences are right around the corner too to help continue our partnership.
See below for information about our upcoming Kindergarten information night this Wednesday, February 1, District Town Hall meetings, PTO City Saver Fundraiser that kicked off on Friday - Monday, February 6 and for the upcoming PTO Girls Night Out, "Pretty in Pink," event along with many other opportunities to engage in our school, district, and community! ALWAYS a lot happening!!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Courtney & Ms. Lowe
