Overview: Psalm 19 is a song about how God is always sending us messages. He tells us who He is by what He’s created. When we look around, we know there must be a God! How else did everything get here? And the world also tells us about what God is like: He has a great imagination, He loves beautiful things, and He is more powerful than we can ever understand. We can learn a lot about God by just looking at what He has made. But creation is just one small way God speaks to us. Another way to know Him is by reading the Bible. It’s full of His words telling us how much He loves us and how He wants us to live. God wants us to know him. That’s why He speaks to us in many ways. We need to be good listeners!

Lesson Focus

In Psalm 19 we are reminded that God has given His people the law to show us our sinfulness and point us to our need for a Savior.
Read the text: Psalm 19

Have one of the kids in the group read Psalm 19, or have the whole group read it from their handout.
As you go through the Psalm, have a signal for the kids in the group to make (like a time-out signal- – a T with your hands) every time they hear another truth about who God is and/ what God is like/ or what God has done.
Each time you take a time-out, briefly talk about that characteristic of God.
As you go through the Psalm focus on these questions/ thoughts…
- (1) What has God done?
- (2) Who does God want to praise Him?
- (3) Why should we praise God?

Talk through what this Psalm teaches us about God’s law. Reread verses 7-11 and tell the kids to jump up when they hear a different name for God’s law and raise their hands each time they hear something about what God’s law does. Talk through these different truths about God’s law and ask if any of them have ever wanted to say things like this about rules or laws. You might even want to take a few minutes and chat about what our normal reaction to rules/ law is (we groan and moan and complain because we don’t want anyone telling us what to do- we want to be in charge of our own lives.)
Cross-Connection – Move into a discussion on why God’s law is different. Explain that when you just read through God’s law it sounds impossible because it’s a call to holiness and perfection, and it might make you depressed when you realize you can’t keep these laws. Then, have one of the kids read Romans 3:20. Explain that the law was given to show God’s perfection and our sinfulness and our need for a Savior. Help the kids to see that the law should cause us to rejoice, because it reminds us of what Jesus did in our place when He died on the cross for our sin. (Romans 5:8)

Activities

Craft 1 - God's Hand

Recommended Time: 10:55AM - 11:05AM

Time: 10-15 minutes

Scissors
Markers

Directions

Have the kids trace their hand on paper and then cut it out - this will be “God’s hand”.
Write “Psalm 19:1” in the middle of the palm
Have the kids draw the sky - the sun, moon, stars, clouds.

The skies display His craftsmanship, the work of His hands.

Craft 2 - Listening to Jesus iPod

Recommended Time: 11:05AM - 11:20AM

Time: 10-15 minutes

Materials needed from the cart:

Paper
Scissors
Markers
Yarn
Pompoms
Glue or Tape

Directions

Have the kids pick out their color for the iPod.
They should cut out a rectangle shape depending on how big/small they want their iPod to be.
They can decorate their iPod to include the components shown in the picture.
Make sure they put on the “screen” “Listening to… GOD.
They can tape yarn to the back of the iPod and on the ends of the yarn they can tie pompoms on and tape for security.

**IMPORTANT** remind the kids this is just a prop and they shouldn’t actually stick the pompoms in their ears!

Game 1 - Simon Says

Game 2 - Books of the Bible Blocks

Recommended Time: 10:25AM - 10:40AM

Directions

Divide into two teams.
Have one kid at a time run down and retrieve a Lego piece for their team and bring it back.
As a group they will work to stack together the books of the Bible in order.

The first team to do this correctly wins!

Activity 1 - Dance It Out

Time: 10-20 minutes

Materials needed from the cart (varies based on the game you choose):

Christian just dance videos below
If they don't want to play the Christian Just Dance game they can play follow the leader.

Wrap It Up!

Recommended Time: 11:20AM - 11:30AM
**Snacks can be given at this time, if needed**

Come together and sit in a circle to talk about what they learned today. Ask them the same questions that you asked at the beginning of the day. How are their answers different now that they know more? Talk about what they can go home and tell their family. This is also a time they can update their journals (big kids only) or color the pictures (littles).
Ask if anyone has a prayer request/praise report. Pray over requests.
Worship time - Have the kids go find a spot to themselves and have some time with God (play the song below for around 3/5 minutes).

Last Minute Filler Ideas

Have them gather around the table and draw a picture or write a letter to their families about what they learned today.
Play a game of some sort. (If you have the hula hoops, have them join hands in a circle and pass the hula hoop around the circle without breaking their hands)
