Elijah and Elisha
Elijah and Elisha
1 Kings 19-22, 2 Kings 1-2
Elijah had a full life of ministry. He was God's chosen prophet who brought God's word the evil kings of the Northern Kingdom.
Right after the altar contest on Mount Carmel with the prophets of Baal, Elijah had to flee. You see, Ahab's wife Jezebel was a very evil woman. She was none too happy to find out about what Elijah did to the prophets of the false gods of Baal and so she sent a messenger to Elijah to tell him that she was going to kill him. So Elijah fled to a place called Horeb. On the way, Elijah became very discouraged and he thought that would be the end of his life. But God sent an angel to feed Elijah and give him the strength to get to Horeb (it took him 40 days to walk there).
God Speaks to Elijah in the Gentle Whisper
This is the context of the story today. This story is pretty straightforward, and you can read it in 1 Kings 19:10-21. God spoke to Elijah and told him to choose Elisha (most confusing transition in Bible history) to replace him after he died. This story has such great detail (the wind, fire, and earthquake did not contain the word of the Lord, but only in the still small voice). It is a great reminder to us that as we learn about all these amazing stories in the Old Testament, knowing the One who performs the miracles is more important than knowing about the miracles!
Elijah is Taken Up to Heaven
The second part of our story can be read in 2 Kings 2:1-18. This is the story of Elijah being taken up to heaven with horses and chariots of fire. Elijah was one of two people in the Bible who did not die. See the story of Enoch in Genesis 5:23-24 for the other one.
Who was Elijah running away from? (Jezebel, because she was mad at him for defeating the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel)
Where did he run to? (Mount Horeb, about 40 days away)
How did God feed Elijah on the way to Mount Horeb? (an angel brought him water and a hot cake)
What came to Elijah on the mountain before God came? (a powerful wind, earthquake and fire)
How did God come to Elijah? (with a soft whisper)
What did God tell Elijah? (To anoint two new kings over Israel and Aram, and to appoint Elisha as a prophet to replace him)
What happened when Elijah hit the Jordan River with his coat? (it parted and they were able to cross on dry land)
Did Elijah die? (no)
How did Elijah get to heaven? (God sent horses, chariots, fire and a whirlwind)
What did Elisha ask of Elijah before he went up to heaven? (to give him a double portion of his spirit, to do the same work Elijah did as a prophet)
How did Elijah respond to Elisha? (he told him that only the Lord could give him that)
What did Elijah leave for Elisha? (his coat)
What happened when Elisha hit the Jordan River with Elijah's coat? (it split in two - this was God's confirmation that Elisha should carry on Elijah's work and that his Spirit would be with Elisha)
Elijah was taken to heaven by God with a chariot of fire.
Do you know how to go to heaven?

Directions
Give each child a bowl and a chariot print out.
Let them cut out the Chariot printout and color it while you squirt some shaving cream in their bowls. ( I would do maybe 1/3 of the bowl only to avoid a mess!)
Next, go around and drop one drop of red paint, one drop of yellow paint, and one drop of orange paint in each childs bowl of shaving cream.
They can mix the paint around in the shaving cream until it looks like fire.
Lastly, they place their chariot cut out into the fire on the side of the bowl so it looks like the chariot is flying up with fire behind it.
Time: 10-15 minutes

None

Directions
Kids line up shortest to tallest behind you.
You be the leader the first trip around the room. Go in a circle around the entire room doing different things that the kids have to mimic behind you.
When you reach the starting point again, you go to the back of the line and have the shortest child be the leader and take a turn going one lap around the room while the other mimic them.
Keep doing this until all kids have had a turn being the leader.
Relate it to the lesson: Talk about how Elisha and Elijah went to multiple places together and he would not leave his side.
Time: 5-10 minutes
Materials needed from the cart:
Construction paper
Markers

Directions
Let the kids pick the color construction paper that they want to be their "cloak". They can pick one piece of up to 4 depending on how big they want their cloak to be. Remind them what Elijah and Elisha did with the cloak.
They can tape together and decorate their cloaks however they would like. It will be used in the next game. You can go ahead and tell them what the game is so that they can make any final adjustments to their cloak and be strategic for the game.
Time: 10-15 minutes
Materials needed from the cart:
two hula hoops
ping pong balls (two different colors)
Cloaks from the cloak craft
Get the details by clicking here!
Directions
Set up multiple sets and play in teams to compete against each other:
Place a Hula hoop in the middle of the room one for each team.
Place 20 ping pong balls inside the Hula hoop (2 different colors, 10 each) (Consider using fewer ping pong balls for younger children.)
Let each team pick one cloak that they made from the previous craft to use for the game.
On “go”, one player runs to the hula hoop and tries to fan the ping pong balls with the cloak so that it separates them by color with a path in the middle. The goal is to separate the two colors with a “path” between them.
If the ping pong balls are knocked outside of the Hula hoop, place them back in the middle and continue playing.
When one play accomplishes this, they should "cross the jordan" and then shuffle the ping pong balls for the next player.
Time: 10-20 minutes

Varies depending on the game

Musical Chairs
Grab the black chairs out of the closet (so that they are lighter to move around) and have the kids play musical chairs!
David, David, Goliath
This is Duck, Duck, Goose.... instead use the words "David, David, Goliath" for the game.
Cup stack races
Keep a stack of cheap plastic cups in your bag to pull out for a quick game. Two children can race each other in making the highest or biggest pyramid of upside-down cups in one minute.
Time: 10-20 minutes
Materials needed from the cart (varies based on the game you choose):
christian just dance videos below
If they don't want to play the Christian Just Dance game they can play follow the leader.
-Have them gather around the table and draw a picture or write a letter to their families about what they learned today.
-Play a game of some sort. (If you have the hula hoops, have them join hands in a circle and pass the hula hoop around the circle without breaking their hands)
