Have you ever seen someone be baptized at your church? What is baptism?
Today, we are going to learn about when Jesus was baptized by a man named John. We call him John the Baptist.
Scripture for Kids to Read Aloud Matthew 3:1-17First, ask the children if they have any questions about the story.
What was John the Baptist preaching? ("Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.")
What did he mean by that? (Jesus was coming soon!)
Where did John live? (in the wilderness)
What did John wear for clothing? (clothes made out of camel hair)
What did John eat? (locusts and wild honey)
Why did people go out to the wilderness to see John? (they were confessing their sins and being baptized)
What did John the Baptist do when Jesus asked him to baptize him? (he tried to refuse because he considered Jesus more worthy than himself)
What happened when Jesus was baptized? (the Spirit of God descended on Jesus like a dove and a voice said "This is my Son, and I love him. I am very pleased with him.")
In this story, people were confessing their sins to John the Baptist and being baptized.

Give each child a graham cracker and add some blue icing.
Give each child 2 teddy grahams. Have one up to baptize and lie one down to be baptized.

- Let the kids pick a color piece of construction paper
- Give them a white piece of paper to trace their hand print and cut it out
- Paste the white handprint down and draw dove eyes on it.
- Next have them glue on a beak and write on the paper "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. "

Two baby dolls
Two buckets

- Divide the kids into two teams
- Line them up "relay" style so that one person from each team will take a turn at a time.
- Give the first person in each team a baby doll and tell them they will run down to their team's bucket, put the baby doll in the bucket, put their hands in the air and say "Thank you God for making me clean", pick their baby doll up from the bucket, run back down to their team, and hand the baby to the next person in line.
- Repeat this with each kid until everyone has had a chance to go. The first team to complete this wins!

- Come together and sit in a circle to talk about what they learned today. Ask them the same questions that you asked at the beginning of the day. How are their answers different now that they know more? Talk about what they can go home and tell their family. This is also a time they can update their journals (big kids only) or color the pictures (littles).
- Ask if anyone has a prayer request/praise report. Pray over requests.
- Worship time - Have the kids go find a spot to themselves and have some time with God (play the song below for around 3/5 minutes).

- Have them gather around the table and draw a picture or write a letter to their families about what they learned today.
- Play a game of some sort. (If you have the hula hoops, have them join hands in a circle and pass the hula hoop around the circle without breaking their hands)
