Psalm 139 is one of the most famous psalms in all of the Bible. It talks about how God pursues us even before we pursue Him.

Heading

This lesson comes from Psalm 139:13-14 and it is designed to teach children that they are wonderfully made. This lesson will be best utilized in a Sunday School or a Kid’s Church setting.Objective: To teach children that God made them on purpose to be who they are and to give them an understanding that they are wonderfully made.Targeted Age Group: Upper ElementaryActivity: Partner the children up and give them each paper and a pencil. Tell the kids that they have ten minutes to draw their partner. Each child gets to keep the picture of themselves (that their partner drew).Memory Verse: At this time ask the kids to recite the verse from the previous week. Ask them to take this verse home to memorize for next week: Genesis 1:27, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

Lesson: Who created you? (give them time to answer). Who gave you your hair color, your height, and your personality? (give them time to answer). Are you beautiful? (give them time to answer). You are beautiful! You are beautiful because God created you, he chose your hair color, your height, your personality, and everything about you!

The Bible says:

For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. (Psalm 139: 13-14, ESV)

You are wonderfully made; do you know what that means? (give them time to answer). Wonderful means extremely good or delightful. Do you feel delightful? (give them time to answer). God delights in you because He loves you and He created you wonderfully! You, each one of you is created by God! You were not an accident, He designed you to be you and He knows you. Did you know that God knows you? (give them time to answer). He knows exactly who you are because He created you to be YOU! He loves you!

Questions:

What does it mean to be wonderful? (Answer: To be delightful)
Does God know you? (Answer: Yes)
How does it feel to know that God created you?

Application: God created you to be you, so you do not need to be afraid or scared of God. He loves you exactly the way you are. You can talk to Him anytime you want, wherever you want. God loves you!

Activities

Craft 1 - God Searches For Our Hearts

Time: 10-20 minutes

Materials needed from the cart:

Construction paper
Scissors
Tape or cling wrap
Markers

Have the kids make a magnifying glass and cute out the center. Tape a heart into the center.

Craft 2 - I am Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

Time: 10-20 minutes

Materials needed from the cart:

Popsicle sticks
Glue or tape
Construction paper
Poppoms or yarn
Googley eyes

Directions

Have the kids draw and color themselves on paper, they can add sticky shapes, pompom, beads, etc. to make it how they want it, once they are done they can cut out the person and glue it to the stick.

Game 1 - Duck Duck Goose

Time: 10-15 minutes

Game 2 - Freeze Tag

Time: 10-15 minutes

Directions

Pick two players to be “It”.
When the game starts, these players give chase to the other participants who are not “it”.
The people who are “it” have 3 minutes (or less - use your judgment!) to work together and try to tag and freeze the other participants.
When the player who is “it” tags another player, they tap them and say “FREEZE!”
The participants who are not “it” need to run, dodge, and hide from the players who are “it”. They also unfreeze other participants who have been frozen by tapping them and saying “UNFREEZE!”
The game is won either by the people who are “it” when they have frozen all other players, or it is won by the “not it” participants when 3 minutes have run out and at least 1 player is still unfrozen.

Activity 1 - Dance It Out

Once you're through the lesson/games use these to fill any remaining time, or the ideas listed below

Wrap It Up!

**Snacks can be given at this time, if needed**

Come together and sit in a circle to talk about what they learned today. Ask them the same questions that you asked at the beginning of the day. How are their answers different now that they know more? Talk about what they can go home and tell their family. This is also a time they can update their journals (big kids only) or color the pictures (littles).
Ask if anyone has a prayer request/praise report. Pray over requests.
Worship time - Have the kids go find a spot to themselves and have some time with God (play the song below for around 3/5 minutes).

Last Minute Filler Ideas

Have them gather around the table and draw a picture or write a letter to their families about what they learned today.
Play a game of some sort. (If you have the hula hoops, have them join hands in a circle and pass the hula hoop around the circle without breaking their hands)
