Romans Summary
10:00-10:15 - Get to know new kids, entertain early arrivals until lesson begins
ROMANS 1:16-17, 3:9-31 , 6:23, 5:6-10, 8:1-10, AND 10:8-13
To teach children that they must believe in the Lord Jesus Christ to be saved. The Apostle Paul wrote the book of Romans to explain the bad news of sin and to reveal the good news of God’s salvation through Jesus Christ. He showed the reader the reality of his or her sin and that the punishment for sin is eternal death, but before the foundations of the earth
were laid, God established a plan that would save mankind from the eternal curse of sin and death. Jesus became the perfect sacrifice, the life that had to be given, and He died in
the place of the condemned. Jesus died to save sinners, even in the midst of their rebellion. Everyone who calls out to Jesus for mercy, confesses He is Lord, and truly believes that God
raised Him from the dead will be saved! There is no longer any condemnation or eternal punishment owed to those who live in Christ Jesus!
Memory Verse
Romans 5:8: But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died
for us.
Romans 10:9: If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that
God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
Read Romans 1:16-17, 3:9-31, 6:23, 5:6-10, 8: 1-10, and 10:8-13:
“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised
Him from the dead, you will be saved.” This lesson explores Paul’s teaching in Romans on
God’s Gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ. It shows children the only way to be saved
from sin’s curse. The Bible teaches that everyone is guilty of sin: “All have sinned and fall short
of the glory of God.” The Bible also teaches that the punishment for sin is eternal death: “The
wages of sin is death.” But there is a cure! “The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ
our Lord!”
Review the Romans’ Road to salvation and discuss how it relates to each person.
1. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Everyone is guilty of sin.
Have you ever told a lie? Stolen anything that was not yours? Said something unkind about
another person? Got angry at your sister or brother? Coveted a toy, or a game, or clothes that
belonged to another person? Disobeyed your mom or dad or teacher? These are just a few
ways sin manifest itself in our lives. We are all guilty.
2. The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). There are consequences to sin besides the guilt
and shame it brings on us. The final punishment is eternal death. It takes only one offense,
and we are guilty of all.
3. Even while still in sin and active rebellion, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Jesus knew we
would be enemies of God because of our sin, yet he still died for us.
4. Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Romans 10:13). There is only
one name that has the power over sin and death to save—that name is Jesus. Call on Him for
mercy, and He will be merciful. The price has been paid.
5. Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised
Him from the dead, and you will be saved (Romans 10:9). Confessing Jesus is Lord is saying
that He is in charge and realizing your life is no longer your own because you have been
bought with a price.
6. You are no longer guilty and condemned (Romans 8:1,15). Not only are you free from the
guilt of sin and the punishment of eternal death, but you are now a child of God with the right
to call Him Abba Father.
Question: What would Paul’s letter to the Roman
church reveal?
Answer: Paul’s letter would reveal things about God that
could be understood only through the life, death, and
resurrection of Jesus.
Question: Have you ever received a card or a letter in the mail.
Teacher Note: Receiving physical letters and or cards through the mail is rare today. In Paul’s time, if
a person wasn’t able to physically go talk to someone, letters were the only way to convey
information to someone.
Question: How did sin enter our perfect world?
Answer: Sin entered our perfect world when Adam and Eve
disobeyed God.
Question: How would you feel if you were too short to ride a
rollercoaster all your friends were going to ride?
Teacher Note: We would feel very left out and maybe even a little helpless. There is nothing we can
do to make ourselves fulfill the height requirement for the ride. We can’t make ourselves
grow! Just like we must meet certain requirements to ride rollercoasters, we have to meet
God’s requirements to enter into a relationship with Him. Before Jesus, God’s requirement
was that we be completely righteous and without sin. Just as we can’t make ourselves grow,
humans can’t live sinless lives. We all fall short of God’s requirements.
Question: Jesus’ death made way for what?
Answer: Jesus’ death made way for people to be forgiven and
for every sin to be carried far away and forgotten forever.
Question: Does it matter if you make mistakes playing a video
game that lets you restart where the last game ended?
Teacher Note: No, in fact, making mistakes can help us to figure out how to get through difficult
sections. If there is no point penalty, then there are no consequences for mistakes in such
a game. This is not true of real life. While God has forgiven us for every sin we have ever
committed and ever will commit, when we sin, there are consequences. God cannot undo
our sins, but He does forgive us, and He can help us work through the consequences of our
actions. We should do our best to follow Jesus and to live our lives as we are called.
Question: What does it mean to follow Jesus?
Answer: Following Jesus means turning away from sin and
selfishness.
Question: Caterpillars turn into butterflies, but can butterflies
turn back into caterpillars?
Teacher Note: No, butterflies can’t turn back into caterpillars. Why would they want to?! They are
beautiful and they can fly! Once we confess that Jesus is Lord, we will always be one of God’s
children. Even if we turn away from our faith, God will never take away His love. We can fail,
but God’s love never will.

Have the kids use any of the materials listed above to create a road map to salvation. Sin should be included on the map as a crossroad where they can show that they can choose sin, or to follow the Lord. Even if they choose the path of sin, their map can have Jesus died for our sins and a reroute back to the way of salvation.
They can explain their maps with each other or even put it in an envelop and title is "romans" as if they were paul writting this letter to the Roman church.

Write the names of the churches (and individuals, if using) on envelopes. Make a set for each team.
Place signs around the play area with the names of the churches (Rome, Corinth, Galatia, Ephesus, Phillipi, Colossae, Thessolonica)
If you have a large group, you can include the individuals that Paul wrote individual letters to. (Timothy, Titus, Philemon)
Divide class into two teams.
Place a sign with the name Paul a good distance from the teams.
Place both piles of envelopes in front of Paul (should be in a different order).
One person from each team runs to Paul and gets an envelope.
They must run to the correct church sign and leave (deliver) the envelope then run back and tag the next teammate to get another envelope.

***Before the Lesson***
Write the books of the Bible (new testament) on Jenga blocks as shown in the picture. You need two sets to play but you can have as many as you need.
Version 1
Divide the kids into however many teams that you have a complete Jenga set for. Let them take turns removing one jenga block at a time. The first person will look and remove the first book of the Bible, if they succeed, then the second person will remove the second book of the Bible, etc...
If the Jenga tower falls, the kids can rebuild the tower and play again!
Version 2
Divide the kids into two teams.
Relay style, have one person from each team run down and find the jenga block that has the first book of the Bible on it and return it to their team. The next person then runs down and finds the block that has book number 2 on it and returns it to their team. As the jenga blocks are returned to their team, they will stack them on top of each other ordering the books of the Bible from the ground up.
