Day 4: Sun, Moon, and Stars

Genesis 1:14-19

14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

Introduction

What did God create on day 4? We know that God made the world and everything in it and we found out that on the first day God made light/day and dark/night, the second day He made the sky and water, and on the third day He made the land, plants, and trees... but what happened on the fourth day? How long do you think it took Him to make everything (7 days, well technically 6)? Today, we are going to learn about the fourth day of creation and what God decided to make!!

  1. You can use white glue like Elmers to glue your popsicle stick stars but it takes hours to dry! I find a glue gun works best by far. It gives the strongest bond so I know my kids homemade ornaments can be used and enjoyed year after year and it’s fast so the kids can get straight on with yarn wrapping. The only downside to using a glue gun is that it sets super quick so you’ve got to know exactly what angle the craft sticks need to lie to make a closed star. You don’t get time to adjust them or any second chances! Eek! Don’t worry though I’ve got a simple method that makes it fool proof!

  2. I simply make a template on paper that I then use to position my popsicle sticks correctly as I glue them. The easiest way to do this is to make your five pointed star on a sheet of paper using no glue. Because there’s no glue you can fiddle and adjust your craft sticks until you are totally happy with your star shape. When you’ve got the star shape you want use a pen to mark a dot at the end of each star point.

  3. Now you’ve got your dot template you can use it to glue your popsicle stick stars with the glue gun and know that they are all going to be in the right position and close up at the end.

  4. Line each stick up between the correct dots and glue them into place one at a time. Continue gluing around the star.

  5. Now you’ve got your wooden star frame children can decorate them with yarn wrapping. Yarn wrapping is a fantastic way to build fine motor and hand eye co-ordination skills as children thread, wrap and turn their stars and yarn.

  6. Children can then wrap as much or as little yarn as they like around their stars. If they want to change colours you can either tie the first colour off onto a stick and then add a second colour or tie the second colour straight onto the end of the first colour.

  7. When the yarn wrapped star ornaments are finished make loop from the yarn for hanging it up on display.

Activity 3 "Twinkle Twinkle Number 4"

Time: 10-20 minutes

Materials needed from the cart:

  • a printout of a large number four as a template

  • black construction paper or card stock

  • this print out of Twinkle, Twinkle

  • a sponge

  • scissors

  • star stickers

  • glitter glue

  • glue sticks

Directions: Click here for pictures of each of the directions.

To prepare, print out a large number to use as a template. Trace it onto black construction paper or card stock. Cut out a number for each student. From a sponge, cut out a moon shape. Print, and cut out the words for Twinkle, Twinkle that accompany this lesson.

In class, help the children glue the Twinkle, Twinkle words to their number fours so that they can sing this song with their parents at home. Help them dip the moon-shaped sponge in glitter glue, and stamp it onto their number four. Provide star stickers for them to decorate their number fours.

Activity 4 "Roll the Dice"

Time: 10-20 minutes

Materials needed from the cart:

  • Dice

  • Piece of paper

  • Crayons

  • Game piece

Get the details by clicking here!

Directions:

1- Let the kids draw a ladder on their paper and write the a number 1-7 in each section.

2- When all kids have their gameboard made, they put their game piece on the number 1

3- When you say go, everyone gets to roll the dice over and over until they get the number 1 on their dice. For the littles, have each child take a turn rolling the dice and everyone gets to move when some rolls a 1 rather than racing or giving each child a dice... they may not know how to count :-)!

4-When a 1 is rolled, they can move their game piece to the number 2 and attempt to roll the number two on their dice. They can not move to the number 3 until they roll a 2.

5- Keep going until lastly someone is on the number 6 and then rolls a 6 in order to get to the "rest day" number 7.

6-When they get to 7 they get to pretend to sleep until everyone else finishes the game.

Wrap It Up!

**Snacks can be given at this time, if needed**

-Come together and sit in a circle to talk about what they learned today. Ask them the same questions that you asked at the beginning of the day. How are their answers different now that they know more about the fourth day of creation? Talk about what they can go home and tell their family about the fourth day of creation.

-Ask if anyone has a prayer request/praise report. Pray over requests.

-Worship time- Have the kids go find a spot to themselves and have some time with God (play the song below for around 3/5 minutes).

Worship

Last Minute Filler Ideas

-Have them gather around the table and draw a picture or write a letter to their families about what they learned today.

-Play a game of some sort. (If you have the hula hoops, have them join hands in a circle and pass the hula hoop around the circle without breaking their hands)
