What do you remember about Moses and his life/journey so far? (Baby moses, he grew up in royalty, he messed up and ran away, God told him to return through a burning bush, he returned to free the Israelites from captivity but the king wouldn't listen so the plagues came, he parted the red sea and led the Israelites to the wilderness for 40 years, he went up on the mountain and carved the ten commandments into two stones, he separated the people into 12 tribes and sent 12 spies into the promise land to make sure it was livable, and last week we learned about Moses giving a speeches to the new generation of Israelites about how they should live.)
Today we are going to learn about one of the laws that Moses talked about to the Israelites, tithing. Do you know what the word "tithe" means? One tenth or one out of ten items. Have each child count out ten items like pennies, candy, fruit, etc. and then ask them to identify a tenth of each group. In the Old Testament, God gave us the tithe as a guideline for giving. After the Israelites escaped from Egypt by walking through the Red Sea, they camped near a mountain called Sinai. Moses went up to the top of the mountain to talk with God. God gave him rules and laws for living. The tithe is one of God's rules. God wants us to give him one tenth of what we have. How can we give God one tenth of what we have? When we give to the church we are giving to God. When we give to others in need we are giving to God. When we give to friends we are giving to God. Talk about how you give to God from the money you make at work.
Where does tithing go? (ans: Tithing helps God’s church grow.)

When you see pictures of money, what numbers, pictures, and words do you see?
To create your own pretend paper money, fold at least one piece of paper in half, joining the short sides together. Fold it in half again, joining the short sides. Fold it in half once more, joining the long sides. Carefully unfold your paper. Bend each fold in reverse to make strong fold lines.
You now have eight rectangles on each paper. In each rectangle, design a make-believe paper bill using markers. Draw a picture of yourself, someone you admire, or your favorite animal. Write numerals on your bills to show how valuable they are. What other designs can you add? Decorate them all the same, or design each one to look different!
When all your imaginary bills are designed, carefully tear the paper on the fold lines to separate them.
To make a wallet to hold your pretend money, fold a piece of paper in half, bringing the short sides together. Fold it in half again, bringing the long sides together.
Tape around the short ends of the folded paper. Bring those ends together, folding your wallet in the middle. Decorate your wallet with markers. Place your paper money inside.
Connection:
After the kids make ten dollars and their wallet, they can practice counting out ten dollars and giving one to the church while putting the other nine in their wallet.

Skittles

Directions
Object lesson: Put 20 skittles (or whatever you have on hand – chocolate chips? goldfish crackers?) in a ziplock bag and hand them out to kids. Tell them that we went to the store and bought the candy, but even though they were OURS we are deciding to share the candy with them. All that we asked in return was 1/10th of it back.
Have the kids count the skittles out and grab 2 small skittles out. (10%)
Then have them carefully count out the rest of the skittles (math education moment = bonus), and put them in a separate pile.
Have the kids compare the two piles, and see how much they still have, even though we had given them all of our skittles and only asked for a small amount in return.
Then explain this is just like what God has asked with tithing. He has blessed us with everything (EVERYTHING) that we have. Talk about what we are blessed with quickly: job, food, family, talents, clothes, cars, houses, electricity to turn on the lights, and more. We have been blessed with so much, and all that God asks in return is 10%. (Have children hold up 10 fingers and put 1 finger down again).

They can tape them together at the end!
Important!!! Have them leave these here so that we can add to them from here on out every time we go into a new book of the Bible!
