This week's lesson is found in 1 Samuel 16:1-13 and we finally begin to discuss David. God told Samuel to find one of Jesse's sons to anoint as the next king. Last week we learned that Saul was told to totally destroy the Amalekites. They didn’t obey God. They saved King Agag, the best sheep and oxen. Because of Saul’s disobedience, the Lord rejected Saul as king. Saul’s disobedience really upset Samuel and he didn’t see Saul again.
God asked Samuel "How long will you mourn for Saul?" Then God told Samuel to fill his horn with oil and go to Bethlehem and find a man named Jesse. I have chosen one of his sons to be the next king.
Samuel replied "How can I? If Saul finds out, he will kill me!" God told Samuel to take a calf and say that you have come to offer a sacrifice. Then, invite Jesse and his sons to the sacrifice. Samuel did just what the Lord told him to do.
When Samuel arrived in Bethlehem, he invited Jesse and his sons to come to the sacrifice. Samuel knew that the Lord would tell him which of the sons of Jesse would be chosen.
Eliab was the oldest son and when he came to Samuel, Samuel thought he was the one. Eliab was tall and good looking. But God Samuel that He doesn’t look at how people look on the outside; God looks at the heart inside. Eliab was not the one God had chosen. Jesse called his next son Abinadab and had him walk in front of Samuel. Samuel said that "The Lord has not chosen this one either." Next, Jesse had Shammah walk by Samuel. But, Samuel the prophet said "The Lord has not chosen this one either." Four more sons walked in front of Samuel, but Samuel said "This is not the one that God has chosen." Then, Samuel asked Jesse "Are these all the sons you have?"
Jesse told Samuel "I have one more son. He is the youngest and is taking care of the sheep."Samuel told Jesse to bring him and they would wait on the sacrifice. Finally, the youngest son whose name was David, arrived. He was strong and healthy and he had sparkling eyes. The Lord told Samuel "This is the one. Anoint him!" So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David in front of his brothers. From that day forward, the Lord God was with David.

Place an object (lemon, radish) in a bag that would be hard to guess what it is by feeling the outside. Make sure the bag is sealed tightly so that it won't come open. Pass the bag around the room asking the children to feel it and try to guess what is inside. Tell them to keep their guesses secret. If you have a large class make more than one bag so that you don't take up too much time with this activity.
Wouldn't it be great if you could see inside this bag without opening it? There are some people who can see inside bags without opening them up. Can anyone think of who they might be? I'll give you a clue. Have you ever gone on a trip in an airplane? That's right, the people who use the X-ray machines at the airport can see what is in your bags when you check in.
I'm thinking of some other people who use X-rays, but they use them to look inside your body. Does anyone know who does that? Doctors and dentists can see inside people without opening people up.
Did you know that God wants us to use X-ray eyes when we look at people? God wants us to look at people's hearts and not judge them by what they look like on the outside. Open your Bible and read the memory verse. What does it mean when it says "God looks at the heart"? Does he look at our hearts like doctors do? No, he looks at our thoughts and feelings.
Ask the children what they think might be in the bag. Open the bag and show them what is in it.
Our story today is about a man who forgot to use his X-ray eyes. He was looking at what someone looked like on the outside instead of what he was like on the inside.

Blindfolds

Directions
Have the children sit in a circle. Pick one child to come to the front of the room and blindfold him or have him turn around so that he can't see the other students. Tell the other children to change places and then point to one child to disguise his voice and say part of the Bible verse. The blindfolded child then guesses who is speaking. If he guesses correctly, he gets to take another turn. If the guesser doesn't guess right, the child that disguised his voice gets to be the guesser.
Time: 10-20 minutes

Put on a pair of heart glasses from the craft activity or hold them up to your eyes. Repeat the phrase and then add a description of a child. Let your children take turns trying to figure out whom you are describing.
"I can't see inside, only what shows,
I can't see your heart but here's what I know . . ."
Add a description of one of your students such as: You are wearing blue pants. You have blond hair. You are missing one tooth. You have four buttons on your clothes, etc.
Alternate version of the game:
Pick one child to stand in front of the room with his back turned to the class. Describe what one child is wearing such as, "Who is wearing a red shirt today?" or "Who is wearing sandals today?" The child then guesses who it is. If he guesses correctly, he gets to take another turn. If he guesses wrong, another child takes a turn.
