What do you remember about Joshua? (Answers can include that he was one of the 12 spies from when Moses sent the 12 spies out, he was one of the two of those spies that trusted God and brought back grapes to Moses, when Moses passed away he is the one that takes command, Rahab and how she helped the two spies that Joshua sent into the promise land, and last week we learned about how they crossed the Jordan River with God's help.)
This story connects directly to the two previous stories: Rahab and Joshua & Crossing the Jordan. Remember that Joshua sent two spies across the Jordan River and told them to check out the land, especially Jericho. Rahab hid them in her house to keep them safe, and in return the spies promised that she would be kept safe when they conquered the city. She only had to lower a scarlet cord from her house (which was in the wall) to signal to the Israelites which house was hers. When the spies returned, Joshua led the people across the Jordan River. They came near to the city of Jericho and found the city locked down because they were afraid of the Israelites. Which brings us to our story...
God gave Joshua special instructions on how to fight this battle. Because the city was guarded so tightly, the Israelites were not going to take the city with a traditional strategy. So, God told Joshua to march around the city with 7 priests blowing rams' horns and walking in front of the Ark of the Covenant. He had fighting men walking in front and behind the priests to guard them. They marched around the city once each day for 6 straight days. Joshua gave them strict instructions not to yell or shout war cries while they were doing this. They simply marched around the city blowing rams' horns and then retreated to the camp to spend the night. Can you imagine how confused the people of Jericho must have been watching this from inside their city?
So they did that for 6 days, and then on the 7th day, they marched around the city 7 times. At the end of the 7th time, Joshua instructed the priests to blow a long blast on the rams' horns and then the story builds to its' climax: "Then Joshua gave a command to the men. He said, 'Shout! The Lord has given you the city!'...The priests blew the trumpets. As soon as the fighting men heard the sound, they gave a loud shout. Then the wall fell down. Every man charged straight in. So they took the city."
Imagine how terrified the people of Jericho must have been when the Israelites shouted and their fortified walls crumbled in front of them! No wonder the Israelites were able to walk in and defeat them!
As they were taking the city, Joshua sent the two spies to rescue Rahab and all her family. They carried her and her family out of the city to protect them. Joshua gave them strict instructions to take all of the gold, silver, bronze, and iron from Jericho to be used in the Tabernacle. And then they burned the city with fire.

Give each child a wall template and colored rectangles. Instruct children to use their rectangles and glue to build up the walls of Jericho.
When the walls are complete, instruct the kids to flip their paper over and use the remainder of their rectangles to create what Jericho would have looked like after Joshua’s victory. Students can use crayons to add more detail if they’d like.

Decide on the number of teams – each team can have 1 or more players.
At one end of the room, set up one table per team.
Build a “wall” on each table using paper cups.
We recommend arranging 10 cups in a straight line, then stacking 9 cups on top of these (total 19 cups per team).
If you are playing with only a few young children, you may use fewer cups.
Divide players into teams of roughly equal number of players. Each team can have 1 or more players.
Give each player a balloon.
Have each team stand in a straight line on the opposite end of the room, away from the paper cup “walls”. (If you are playing with only 1 player per team, the players can stand next to their paper cup ”wall”.)
On “go”, 1 player from each team runs to their table and blows up their balloons. They can blow their balloons as big or as small as they want. Players then release the air from the balloons and try to knock down the wall of paper cups. Once the balloon is deflated, players run back to the starting point and the turn passes to the next team member. (Players can only blow their balloons when they are at the “wall”)
The objective of this game is to be the first team to fully demolish their “walls”, using only air from their balloons. Players are not allowed to touch the tables or the cups.
The “wall” is considered fully demolished when all the cups are either lying on their sides or have fallen off the table.
If you are playing with younger children, you may need helpers to blow up the balloons for them.
Consider using balloon pumps for this.
Alternatively, have the kids knock down the “walls” using ping pong balls.
