Moodboard
Moodboard
Our moodboard was based off of tiles, repeating patterns of floral designs. Pictures were found on Pinterest.
First sketch
Our first sketch was a star type of pattern, inspired by geometric tiles. We decided to scratch this idea and go with something more floral.
First Draft
The fist draft was based of off a sort of floral tile, and was about one inch wide and about an inch tall. The filament created little wires that stretched across the top of the design, but we fixed that by using a different filament.
Second draft
The second draft was not symmetrical and created using catenary curves and control points. It was secured using a cross that went through every floating part. We continued to use the cross pattern in our other sketches.
Printing
This was the process of printing our first draft. It came out well, and let us see the problems with our design. It took roughly 1 hour and 40 minutes to print, and was about 1 inch wide.
Final draft
Our final (sort of) draft was perfectly symmetrical, and we decreased the size of the seed looking thing on the corners.
the latch mechanism was a square with 3 teeth cut out of it. Each tile had 3 teeth attached to the corner and 1 latching square,
Slicer in process and settings.
We used 25% infill with no supports, and we used 0.20mm filament. We set it to speed print because it was going to take several hours to print. It ended up taking 2 hours to print.
Final product with errors
Errors: the linking mechanism didn't actually link the parts, and the individual pieces didn't lay flat on the table. The joining teeth had a curved edge, and the lip was too wide for the tooth. the other parts of the design worked really well, such as the cross in the middle that held all the pieces together. We fixed this problem by gluing the pieces together instead of a snap fit. Zach sanded down the teeth and gap filler to fix it in place.
The pattern was a success, and came out how we had hoped. The latch mechanism was a bit clunky looking and also not functional so that was a net negative, but the revamped design was an improvement from the nonsymmetrical draft.
