Lunch Buddies

Mr. Spence, one of the life skills teachers, has created the Lunch Buddies program in the 2024-25 school year to help his students as well as the other life skills students obtain the social skills they need to adapt in the general population. It was created to be a reward system for the kids to encourage them to work hard during the week. It was created for the life skills classroom. One of the skills they try to teach the kids is social skills, such as how to use manners, like saying please and thank you, and asking for what they need. This program will help them use those skills in a more populated environment without their teacher or paraprofessional being present.
The general education student would go to Mr. Spence’s classroom and request that, if one of his students is good during that week, they can come to
lunch with the gen-ed (general education) student. Then when the date is set you would go down to Mr. Spence’s before your lunch and pick up the student, take them to the cafeteria, get them lunch then when lunch is over you walk with them back to their classroom.
When asked Mr. Spence said “It teaches them [his students] social skills they can’t learn in a classroom, like how to socialize and when to jump into conversations and how to act appropriately in the world. It also opens up opportunities for the gen-ed class to maybe discover something that they think they might not like, work.” Mr. Spence said that he hopes that another life skills classroom will become involved by Thanksgiving break.
