Longtime YouTube Creator MatPat Announces Retirement
By: Anthony Reitano
Matthew Robert Patrick, better known as MatPat, is one of history’s longest-tenured YouTube creators. He started his first channel, The Game Theorists, back in 2011. It is a go-to destination for gamers seeking in-depth analyses and entertaining discussions surrounding their favorite games. His first channel has since grossed an impressive 19 million subscribers and over 4 billion views.
Since his first channel was such a success, he created four additional channels; The Food Theorists, The Style Theorists, The Film Theorists, and Game Theory Live. In each channel, he uses humor, research, and evidence to present theories and explanations about popular topics, making complex ideas accessible and entertaining to a wide audience. His thought-provoking theories and entertaining presentations have made him a prominent figure in pop culture.
He stated that March 9 would be his last day hosting his YouTube franchise and that he would be “handing off the channels to someone else.” However, he is still going to host Game Theory Live. MatPat explained in his tearful farewell video that he wanted to spend more time with his family, having been “work first for over a decade.”
“We knew that, honestly, we didn’t want to do this forever,” MatPat said. “As much as I love you and I love overthinking things, and I love theorizing, I don’t love late nights.”
“I miss the days where I could just sit down on the couch with Steph and play video games, and it’s not for content,” he continued. “Or I’m playing a game, and I’m not thinking about what theories are going to come out of that. I miss it.”
MatPat’s impact on society will continue to be felt long after his departure.
