On Monday, September 16th, Ms. Kotyk’s AP Biology Classes did an “Organelle Speed Dating Activity.”
Students in periods 1 and 3 participated by personifying an organelle, or a specialized structure within a cell, and “dating” other students’ organelles. As the College Board recommends this activity for AP Biology students, the classroom was given a “café style” atmosphere.
During the 3-minute intervals, students discussed their organelle’s relatives, jobs, and favorite TV shows. Then, after the 3 minutes, students were to fill out a “compatibility score card” which included the “organelle’s cell type”, “function”, “red flags”, and “match ranking”. The organelles included the: nucleus, ribosomes, smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, cytoplasm, and much more.
Students were then asked to vote on which peer best explained their organelle’s function and compatibility. In period 1, Kendyll Porter won with 3 votes, and in period 3 Leah Hogamier won with 4 votes.
Overall, according to the AP Biology students, the activity was a fun, applicable way for them to expand their knowledge of organelles and to obtain a greater understanding of how the cell functions.
