This year, cheer has been preparing hard for the season. Participating in both football and basketball games, the squad brings school spirit and good sportsmanship wherever they go to cheer on the respective sport.
According to cheer senior Calise Czekanski, the cheer season begins in the summer, with “open gyms where we practice stunting and just overall being comfortable with each other and working well together,” as well as UCA Camp, which is organized by a national cheer organization that comes to the school and the squad learns some of the cheers they use in football games.
There is no real “cheer captain” position, however, the cheer seniors make the necessary decisions together. “We try to make decisions for the team, not just ourselves,” Calise stated. Being a cheer senior entails things like decorating the football seniors’ houses, which entails a significant amount of planning.
Calise’s favorite part of cheerleading is making everyone loud and creating a positive environment for everyone. “You have to be dedicated and realize it’s about the team and just having a good school spirit,” Calise stated.
Calise’s favorite memory is going to the girls WPIAL game at Pitt, where the squad sang along to music on Calise’s speaker, as well as cheering in the rain
