Have you ever been interested in learning a language spoken with your hands? One of the clubs here at AHS is dedicated to American Sign Language, or ASL. ASL is a fun and educational club for everyone. This year, the club will be learning basic conversational words and phrases in order to communicate with others who use sign language. The club’s student leaders are Nesta Adkins and Larissa Frain.
ASL emerged in the early 19th century, originating from the American School for Deaf which was established in 1817. Currently, more than 1.5 billion people (nearly 20% of the world’s population) live with hearing loss. Considering those figures, it is likely to come into contact with someone who uses ASL. Wouldn’t you want the chance to communicate with them? If you’d like to learn sign language, ASL Club meets on Wednesdays from 2:20 to 3 p.m.
