Here at AHS, the possibilities are endless for elective courses. Two recent class additions in particular are proving to be a hit within the school.
The Unified Family Consumer Science and Physical Education classes offer a chance for life skills students to work one-on-one with some of their peers that they would normally not have classes with. This opportunity allows students to dive into a teaching environment and step out of their comfort zones.
Speaking from personal experience within the Unified Culinary class, it has been a joy so far to have the opportunity to do hands-on learning while being on the teaching side of a classroom. It’s great making connections with the life skills students and getting to know them on a personal level.
The unified classes also allow for them to step into a new environment with different people, rather than seeing the same few people all day. The class makes a variety of food from sweet treats such as ice cream to turkey dinners and taco Tuesdays. They play matching games with measuring cups to keep their minds engaged. The class gives the students the ability to gain worldly skills to help set up their futures for success.
Two students in the Unified Family Consumer Science course explained their intentions for taking the class this semester. Senior Kayla Thomas said “My sister is on the spectrum, and I wanted to get to know how to teach kids like her.” Another student, Ashlynn Zurn, shared that “I wanted to help the special needs class to get to know them a little better and to have a good time.”
Kayla and Ashlynn also shared that their experience has been great so far and that they have learned so much. Kayla said that she is planning on majoring in early childhood and special education, so having the chance to take these specific courses is a great opportunity for her to get involved with her major before graduating.
When asked whether they would recommend the Unified courses to other students, they responded passionately. “Yes! Any chance I get, I tell people to sign up.” Kayla said. Ashlynn ended the conversation by stating that it has been a great experience and she is eager to help out and have fun.
According to the student handbook, the fundamental principle of Unified Physical Education (PE) is to “promote inclusion with meaningful involvement.” The class focuses on the development of strength, flexibility, endurance, agility, cardiovascular conditioning, coordination, teamwork and good sportsmanship.
Like Unified FCS, Unified PE pairs students together in a one-to-one ratio. The activities are developed according to students’ capabilities and physicians’ recommendations.
Expanding students’ learning opportunities is important to the families, employees, and students in Armstrong. To learn more about the new Unified courses, consult the student handbook or visit the guidance office with any questions.
