New Songwriters to Watch in 2024
By: Anthony Reitano
We’re just a month into 2024, and there are already some big-time album releases from well-known singers to come this year, like Usher’s “Coming Home,” Jennifer Lopez’s “This is Me Now,” and Ariana Grande’s “Eternal Sunshine.”
With that being said, several rising artists have caught many people’s attention. Read the following list to see what rising artists may catch your attention this year. You may find a new artist that you’ll enjoy!
Dylan Gossett
A fiercely independent spirit and a love of cinematic storytelling shape Dylan Gossett's songwriting as he soaks up the sounds of country outliers like Turnpike Troubadours and Cody Johnson.
It was no surprise when his debut single ‘To Be Free’ exploded on TikTok, which grossed over 3 million Spotify streams. Still, it was his song ‘Coal’ that catalyzed his breakthrough, as it closes in on an incredible 60 million Spotify streams!
Now signed to Miranda Lambert’s Big Loud Texas imprint, his debut record song, No Better Time, has already proved that the early promise he showed was no fluke, and it doesn’t look like slowing down anytime soon.
“I’ve always wanted to create a full body of work, and I finally had the chance to with this project.” “Every single sound and noise you hear was created, mixed, and recorded from a laptop in my bedroom. I wrote every word. I think that is why hearing my voice on the radio is so special to me; there’s not a single part of it that I didn’t have my fingerprints on.”
Margo Cilker
Raised in California and based in the Pacific Northwest, Margo Cilker writes songs about the natural world and her family history. “I love her lyrics,” said local musician Sera Cahoone. “She’s witty. She’s just a great songwriter. It was pretty immediate for me. I was like ‘Whoa, that is such a tricky lyric that you did there!’ So I knew that she had something special going on.”.
Cahoone produced Cilker’s debut record, “Pohorylle.” The new album features 11 songs punctuated by barroom piano, pedal steel guitars, and bouncing horn arrangements. “Yeah, that’s just a song about marriage,” said Cilker. “It’s a song about giving each other space. It’s a powerful message ‘Things are really hard right now, but I’m not letting go. I’m going to hang on.’ I had this image of an elastic—sometimes someone does have to ramble. If you’ve got to ramble, ram. Go and come back. It’s that kind of leniency I would want someone to offer me, too.”.
Her second album is called Valley of Heart’s Delight, which refers to her old home in California’s Santa Clara Valley before their orchards were paved over and replaced with Silicon.
Margo lives near the Columbia River in Goldendale, Washington with her husband, songwriter, and working cowboy Forrest VanTuyl, as well as their dog and some horses. When she leaves on her first headlining tour this March, make plans to buy a concert ticket!
Nolan Heilman
Nolan is a Kittanning native and a graduate of the Class of 2023 at AHS. Nolan writes, records, and plays acoustic folk-rock music and was a 2023 National YoungArts Finalist. Nolan was an active participant with the county chorus group every year, he starred in several AHS musicals as a lead character, and he was once a member of The Hawks´ View.
Before college, he was a member of two bands in the Pittsburgh area: AndMore and Madeline Jo & Friends. Nolan is currently a freshman studying Popular Music at the University of Southern California. His future goals include headlining the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado and visiting all 63 national parks.
Chappell Roan
Chappell Roan was born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz in Willard, Missouri. She took the stage name Chappell Roan in honor of her grandfather Dennis K. Chappell, who died of brain cancer in 2016. His favorite song was "The Strawberry Roan,” which made her eventually change her name.
When she was 10, she began playing the piano. At 14 years old, she began uploading covers of songs to YouTube, drawing attention from various record labels.
When she entered her teen years, she began songwriting and attended Prodigy Camp, a performing arts camp where she continued to study music and songwriting. When she was 17 years old, she uploaded an original song titled "Die Young" to YouTube. She subsequently traveled to New York for several musical showcases, which led to her signing with the music label Atlantic Records.
Roan later described missing many childhood experiences (due to her focus on writing songs for the public) in the "messy" beginning of her music career, including prom and her high school graduation.
Evan Honer
Evan Honer hails from Surprise, Arizona — a name that perfectly sums up his emergence last year. In 2022, he auditioned for American Idol but was told he should stick to his day job.
Throughout the last 12 months, Honer has become one of the fastest-rising entertainers in the folk-country space. He released his debut album, West on I-10, in April, as well as a string of immensely popular singles. Honer has celebrated milestone after milestone in 2023 and paved a golden path to stardom.
Evan Homer will be heading out on his debut headlining tour this year and has promised that new music will be on the way, too.
Moses Sumney
This alternative/indie and R&B singer recently toured with Daniel Caesar on his “Superpowers World Tour” as an opening act. Sumney captures his audience from the beginning with the addicting yet soothing sounds of the piano keys or guitar strums. His voice reminds you of the captivating sounds of Daniel Caesar and Frank Ocean, giving the ultimate allure. The comparison to these stars is most apparent in his popular songs “Plastic” and “Doomed,” which is what has fans wanting more.
During the artist’s Paris Fashion Week 2023 performance of his song “Doomed,” it seemed as though the entire world came to a standstill. The air resonated with his celestial voice, delivering a powerful and emotionally charged performance. Sumney serenades crowds with some of the most emotional songs that make time stop and magic fill the air while touring with Daniel Caesar.
After showing the world what he and his voice are capable of, 2024 will surely have more of his magical melodies and enchanting performances.
Mystic Marley
Singer-songwriter Mystic Marley — granddaughter of Bob Marley — has toured with her father, Stephen, and released several singles, including a recent collaboration with Nailah Blackman and Walshy Fire, “JUMP.”
Her music is inspired by both her lineage and her current surroundings. “I was born in the States but grew up in a Jamaican household, so I was influenced by all kinds of music,” says Mystic. “There’s a nice blend between pop and reggae crossing more and more. I follow my intuition when it comes to music and making sure we have elements of where we come from.”
Although this list does not include every new songwriter who is going to make headlines in 2024, hopefully, you are excited to explore the artists featured above.
