Arabella Burtt and Mylea Riggle, two of the Armstrong River Hawks girls soccer captains, sat down to discuss their current season. Seniors Sydney Brown and Maddie Stein, both captains, as well as Angelica Lopez also join forces to lead the team. There are twenty-four girls on the team this year, and they have embarked on one of their most successful seasons yet. “There’s no drama and everyone is more motivated to win and it is definitely a more positive atmosphere,” said Arabella, regarding what has made this season different from previous ones.
So far, the River Hawks have won three section games, which ties them for the most games the team has ever won in previous years. Arabella and Mylea both agreed that the freshmen this year are part of the reason for their success. “They give us an offensive push,” Arabella stated.
This season, Mylea Riggle made school history when she reached fifty career goals, which is the equivalent to scoring 1000 points in basketball. On reaching this achievement, Mylea said, “It makes me more confident to know that our team can achieve these kinds of goals and records.”
Being seniors, Arabella and Mylea are both sad to leave the team. “I’m sad that I won’t be able to play with my best friends again,” said Mylea, who plans to continue playing soccer in college. Senior Sydney Brown is already committed to playing soccer at Waynesburg University, a NCAA Division III school.
For the underclassmen, Mylea and Arabella gave some advice: “Have fun playing, come into every game with a positive attitude, always give 110%, and never give up!” The team’s goal this year is to make it to the playoffs. The girls soccer senior night is tentatively scheduled for the Oct. 12 game against Redbank.
