🍎 Seamlessly Integrate AI: NotebookLM and Gems in Google Classroom

Google has integrated NotebookLM and Gemini Gems directly into Google Classroom, empowering you to share AI-powered study guides and personalized learning assistants—all grounded in your specific class materials.

Here are the step-by-step directions for teachers to create and assign these tools in Google Classroom:

Step 1: Access the Creation Menu

1. Go to Google Classroom and select your class.

2. Click on the Classwork tab.

3. Click the + Create button.

Step 2: Create or Attach a NotebookLM Notebook

NotebookLM is an interactive study guide grounded in your source materials (e.g., PDFs, Google Docs, Slides).

1. Under the + Create menu, select NotebookLM. (Alternatively, you can select Assignment or Material, and then choose the NotebookLM option under the Attach section).

2. In the pop-up window, you have two options:

   • Select existing: Choose a notebook you have previously created on the NotebookLM website.

   • Create new: This launches a new NotebookLM tab where you can:

     • Choose Class Content to instantly import supported attachments from your Classroom posts (Assignments, Materials, etc.) as sources for the new notebook.

     • Edit the notebook (add/edit sources, generate Studio items like Audio Overviews or Study Guides).

3. After selecting/creating your notebook, return to the Classroom tab, complete the title and description, and set your posting options (assign, schedule, or save as a draft).

4. Click Assign (or Post) to share the NotebookLM notebook with your students.

Step 3: Create or Attach a Gemini Gem

A Gemini Gem is a custom AI expert (like a "Quiz Me" bot or a "Study Partner") that you can ground in your class materials.

1. Under the + Create menu, select Gem. (Alternatively, you can select Assignment or Material, and then choose the Gem option under the Attach section).

2. In the pop-up window, you have two options:

   • Select existing: Choose a Gem you have already created in the Gemini app.

   • Create new: This launches a new Gemini tab where you can:

     • Select a template (e.g., Study partner, Quiz me).

     • Choose Class Content to personalize the Gem with your class materials as its knowledge base.

     • Click Create Gem, edit/review it, and click Update to save it.

3. After selecting/creating your Gem, return to the Classroom tab, complete the post details, and set your posting options.

4. Click Assign (or Post) to share the Gemini Gem with your students.

Student Access: Students can find the assigned NotebookLM notebooks and Gemini Gems either directly as a posted Assignment or Material on the Classwork page, or in the dedicated Class learning tools section at the top of the Classwork stream.
