Parents,
I have four items of interest for you:
1. Due to the proximity of the schools, busses for our swim meets this week are one way. Please pick up your athlete at Pioneer HS (Tuesday) and Whittier HS (Thursday) between 5:30-6pm . You can also instruct them to walk home from either event. Of course, I would love to have you there for the whole meet so I can update you on our home pool situation.
2. We are asking students to fundraise with DONATION SCRATCHER CARDS. Each card will have a sticker to scratch off (like a lotto ticket) but it reveals how much of a donation the scratcher will give. Basketball did this and Coach Porter reported it as a success. Donations will be from $1-10. Your swimmer will be briefed on how to offer the scratcher to family and friends so there is no confusion. The min amount per card is $7. Our goal is $25 per swimmer (roughly 4 cards). If you prefer, you can "buyout" for the $25. This $25/athlete will be used to pay for the athlete's dinner at our end of year banquet.
3. We are asking for donations for our three softball snack bars. Please check the InstaTeam App/have your athlete show it to you. We need donations (chips, candy, sodas, etc) and parents to help run the snack bar for three days only! 4/5, 4/11, & 4/18. This money will be used for DJ and photo booth for our end of the year banquet. Athletes can either make a food/drink donation (listed on InstaTeam), sign up to run the snack bar (3 athletes/parents per day), or a $25 donation to the snack bar can be made as a "buyout".
4. Senior Swim Meet will be 4/13 against La Serna. Seniors will receive special recognition during the swim meet. Senior Parents, please join us in recognizing our athletes!

The following is a list of swimmers that have officially met the Automatic (Auto) or Consideration (Con) times to qualify for CIF. Swimmers will still have a chance to qualify or improve their qualifying times in Friday's finals. Times will be submitted before the Saturday morning deadline, but we will have to wait until Sunday for CIF SS to consolidate all league entries and rank them. Time Trials Feb 4
Friday night was our first official time trials. Every athlete swam a 100 IM and a 50 of each stroke. Even though we are still missing a few of our swimmers that are in winter sports, it was a chance for many of our 'newbies' to get their first time. And for our returnees, it gives them an idea of how far off they are from last year's league finals. Our stats will be doing a little data entry this week, and we will share that spreadsheet with our athletes shortly thereafter.
Our first pre-season swim meet with be March 4, against Bell Gardens, but we will try to sneak in another Time Trial just before. Not only will it give coaches some solid info to help assign events, but it will give swimmers a chance to gauge their own improvement. You can see the rest of the schedule here.
Facility Update Feb 3
During the Feb 3 Stakeholder meeting, the Architects gave their presentation again. When we were asked which option we should move forward on, there was one vote for Option A (see Board's Online Agenda), one vote for Option C2, and 7+ votes for the C1 Option. I'm very happy that one of the C Options were selected.
There are still lots of steps that need to occur, from the actual specific designs to the State certification, but our possible date for completion could be as early as end of Spring 2024. I, for one, am very excited at the options a larger pool will give us, from year round programs to even aquatic camps for junior high students.
Next on our wish list is finding a facility that we can use for the next two years. We are currently at Whittier HS, and being able to spread out swimmers is great, but the late hours (MWF 5-7pm and TuTh from 4-6pm) is an unnecessary disruption for our athletes, their families, and staff.
Facility Update
During the Jan 18 School Board Meeting, the Architects gave a presentation regarding the plans for the aquatic center. If you are curious to see all three options, you can find them on the School Board's Online Agenda. My choice would be the Option C, for the following reasons:
Does not take away from any building's current use or any athletic field use. Option A takes the R and S buildings for storage and office space, displacing the teachers and staff that are currently there. Option B takes away valuable field space between the Old Gym and the Football Field.
Construction can take place independently from future sports venues and locker room facilities. We don't have to wait for future plans to be approved, which will only lengthen the total project time. ERHS swimming and water polo have already spent one full season without a practice facility. Swimming is starting its 2nd season practicing at another high school. Practices start and end after other schools are done. Our athletes shouldn't have to have practices that late in the evening.
When the Football stadium and other fields are being worked on, we won't have to shut down as well. Once the pool is finished, we can get some of our athletes back to normal. And, we can look into starting an after school swim club that our Junior High students can walk over and learn both competitive strokes AND the basics of water polo
Parents, please drop an email to our board members and encourage them to select Option C2.
